Fever is one of the most common reasons patients visit our clinic. It is the body's natural defence mechanism — a higher body temperature makes it harder for bacteria and viruses to survive. However, not all fevers are equal. Knowing when to wait it out at home and when to seek medical care could save your life or your child's life.
Normal Fever vs. Dangerous Fever
A normal fever in adults ranges from 37.5°C to 38.5°C and usually indicates the immune system is fighting an infection. A high fever above 39°C, particularly if it doesn't respond to paracetamol, warrants a doctor's review. Any temperature above 40°C is a medical emergency.

Special Caution for Children
In children under five, a fever above 38°C should be assessed by a doctor sooner rather than later. Febrile seizures, while frightening, are generally short-lived — but the underlying cause must still be investigated. Infants under three months with any fever above 38°C require immediate evaluation.
Dengue Awareness
In Malaysia, dengue fever is always a concern. Warning signs of dengue that require urgent hospitalisation include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, and a sudden drop in fever followed by feeling much worse.
If you are unsure, it is always better to come in and let us assess you properly. We can perform a rapid dengue test, full blood count, and other investigations to determine the cause of your fever quickly.
